Welcome to Drive Green, where we're driving positive change in Westborough's transportation sector. Did you know that almost 30% of the town's total carbon pollution (i.e. greenhouse gas emissions) stem from the use of personal cars and trucks burning fossil fuels? At Drive Green, we're on a mission to change that.
The Need for Change
Westborough recognizes the urgent need to address climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In line with national efforts, Massachusetts is paving the way for a sustainable future. Starting in 2035, only electric vehicles will be permitted for new vehicle sales, marking a crucial step toward a cleaner, greener community.
Sustainable Westborough is taking significant actions to propel our town toward a sustainable future:
Community Awareness: We organize events to increase awareness of the myriad electric vehicle options available, ensuring residents are well-informed when considering sustainable transportation choices.
Annual Regional Electric Vehicle (EV) Expo every Fall: Includes dozens of vehicles, some available for test drives, and also several informational booths Click Here
Annual Westborough Environmental Action Fair (WEAF) every Spring: Includes an EV informational table Click Here
Charging Infrastructure: Drive Green is strategically planning public access to EV charging stations, working to provide convenient options for residents. We're also engaging with large apartments and condominiums to establish more charging points.
Municipal Fleet Electrification: Collaborating with the town, we are actively involved in the electrification of municipal fleet vehicles, reducing emissions from public services.
We have a significant challenge ahead of us. As of 2023 just 2% of the vehicles registered in Westborough were EVs or PHEVs (see above chart). In order to meet the state goal of reducing vehicle emissions by 86% of the 1990 values by 2050, we need to phase out gas and diesel vehicles. You can make a difference!
